Changing your name in Aotearoa – the process, the trials and the tribulations
I am currently in the land of the Free. We’ve flown 14 hours to have a holiday in Washington DC and New York City with the family. It is amazing…… Pokémon Go and Reality
Certain parts of the internet has been buzzing today because someone called ProudGamer8 tweeted at Richard Dawkins about Ahmed Mohamed and Dawkins is resolutely standing his ground.
In case you’ve missed it all, Ahmed is a 14 year old kid who was arrested for possessing what looked like dodgy electronics. He took it to school, and people over-reacted and he was arrested for bringing a ‘bomb’ to school.
[Update: the other argument is that he was arrested for deliberately ‘faking’ a hoax. I.e. waste of police time etc which is an interesting point too, youtube link here thanks @soleeternaltat for the heads up]
So this link came across one of my newsfeeds today. Yea, it’s an American context, about American-Asian kids going to American colleges. However, it’s not the first we’ve heard of such a thing, here in Aotearoa anyway. There was this gem from 2010 in our very own Herald.
So my last post said that it was probably gonna be one of two. How right I was! I guess it’s not really psychic ability, more like I know how lazy I am 🙂 In fact, this post wouldn’t have happened at all except that I read an article which reminded me of something that happened and so here it goes…
Listened to the Wonder Rose Rice commercial for the umpteenth time today. For those of you that don’t know (and really, why should you) it’s a new brand of rice for sale in NZ. Apparently it comes with quite an aggressive marketing strategy, I’ve hardly heard ads for any other rice brands! Also it’s available in the Chinese supermarkets too… wow!Bubbling racism…
I read one of those typically funny posts on the internet today… you know, one of those funny lists of a whole bunch of strangers saying really stupid things (the link is below to the particular one I read, if you are interested, do it, it is quite entertaining) and I thought to myself, well, I guess it’s not that bad, it’s not like I actually know those people…
Having worked till the wee hours of the night on my literature review (which will hopefully, fingers crossed, form part of my Masters next year) I thought I’d reformat a teensy bit and post as a blog post… so enjoy…Race or Religion? Is there a difference?
